Executive Overview of Project Management (EOPM)

This course is designed for executive managers overseeing project managers. EOPM provides an introduction to standard language, tools, and techniques of project management in order to better create policy for project management and oversee the work of project managers. This will assist those who are implementing or considering standard PMI-based project management in their organizations. Its one-day format fits into the schedule of executives while providing a forum for evaluation of how their organization is progressing in making their projects more systematic and process oriented.

Organization of the Course

The course is organized to focus on the questions that are foremost in the minds of executive in a project-intensive organization:

Project Management Concepts
A brief introduction to standard models for project management with some analysis of their strengths and weaknesses. Introduction to standard knowledge areas, lifecycles, and estimation practices.

Project Management Processes
The processes as identified by the PMI: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, and closing.

Project Management Artifacts
The expected authorizing documents, planning documents, baselining documents, and project tracking documents that experienced project managers use in executive reporting.

The course includes lecture and a generous portion of workshop activities for the executives to reflect on their own organizational practices and adherence to standards. Time is allowed for executives to craft meaningful action items for increasing the quality of project management in the organizations they will return to.
